2006: Oh Cay Felix

Oh Cay FelixCountdown to the 50th Futurity

Oh Cay Felix was the first horse to win both the Open and the Amateur finals at the 2006 NCHA Futurity. Craig Thompson trained the gelding and rode him to a 227-point win in the Open finals, the second highest score in Futurity history at that time.

Breeder Patrick Collins of Lincoln, Illinois took the Amateur honors on the son of High Brow Cat and Oh Cay Shorty.

“He’s one of the grittiest horses,” Thompson said. “He just loves to work. You cut him clean, and he takes care of the rest.”

Oh Cay Felix has earned more than $442,000 and he was Thompson’s mount in last month’s Neiman Marcus NCHA Futurity Champions Cup. Thompson has qualified Oh Cay Felix’s full sister, Oh Miss Caroline, to this year’s Open semi-finals for Patrick and Laura Collins.

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
