1965: Chickasha Dan

Chickasha DanCountdown to the 50th Futurity

In 1965, Dr. Allen Hamilton, an optometrist and non-professional rider from Big Spring, Texas, won the NCHA Futurity on Chickasha Dan, before Non-Pros had their own separate class.

Two hundred thirty-five horses were nominated for the 1965 Futurity, a huge increase over the inaugural show just three years earlier.

Chickasha Dan, who worked last in the finals, was a full brother to the 1963 Futurity champion, Chickasha Glo. The $7,274 winner’s check was the biggest that had ever been paid to a cutting horse.

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
